La Ascensor de Artillería

Sorry for the radio silence but we have been offline these last two days. As usual we are keeping up a brisk pace. There is simply so much to do and see.

I am finally getting the hang of the layout of the city but it is a challenge! My Spanish teacher says one can describe the layout of Valparaíso like it was as if someone took all the parts of a city in their hands, shook them like dice, and then threw them out on the land surrounding the Bahía of Valparaíso. Estoy de acuerdo! I agree!

These ascensores are the key for me. From what I can tell, the city is like this: the land close to the port (El Plan) is flat and has all the tall buildings. Then there is a huge cliff which can be ascended by stair or ascensor. There are 15-20 working ascensores. Each one takes you up into a different neighborhood of the city and each one has been a delight. The latest one took us up La Artillería which, as the name suggests, was the hill where they used to put all of their artillery and defenses.

The view is so amazing that even the two teenagers stood transfixed. Elaine and Sean were convinced there was a massive green screen somewhere. Claire and Claudia were delighted by watching the massive cranes working in the port below and Emily Jane found Eric's school far across the bay and waved at her dad who was busy working. They simply could not take their eyes off of the view of the bay, the hills and the Pacific. It was mesmerizing.
